This is absolutely the oddest agave species we have ever grown. I purchased a personal collection and thought for years it was some form of Aloe as it was unlabeled.
With the strong light we are growing it in now (50% shade) in Arizona it tends to keep this rich reddish brown color but in less light it will be more of the apple green you can see in center of the plant with the lighter mid-stripe very apparent. I have seen one of these grown outside under the partial shade of a palm grove and they become even a richer red-brown. The form you see here is typical of the plants as they tend to be much more horizontal than vertical. The leaves are very thick top to bottom even though they are obviously not very wide. We are still mulling over how best to ship this species as a pizza box would make more sense than most cartons. Ty tells me we will custom make cartons by cutting down a large box to handle the unusual proportions of this truly strange agave. I have never seen this species offered anyhwhere so if you really enjoy having unique plants, this vegatative star shape is right up your alley. 5/18/10
